Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Development journalism focuses on addressing issues that hinder social and economic progress, often advocating for policy reforms and community empowerment. In Jama’are LGA, Bauchi State, development journalism has become an influential tool in promoting rural electrification projects. By highlighting the challenges faced by rural communities, such as inadequate access to electricity and its impact on education, health, and livelihoods, journalists stimulate discussions and attract the attention of policymakers and investors (Garba & Ibrahim, 2023). Rural electrification is critical to improving living standards and fostering economic growth, and development journalism plays a vital role in mobilizing support and ensuring accountability in project implementation.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of rural electrification, many communities in Jama’are LGA still lack access to reliable electricity. Challenges such as insufficient funding, bureaucratic delays, and a lack of awareness about project benefits hinder progress. While development journalism has the potential to address these issues, its effectiveness in promoting rural electrification in Jama’are LGA is yet to be fully understood. This study explores the role of development journalism in influencing rural electrification initiatives and overcoming associated challenges.
